Wayfinding is a system, not a collection of signs.

A facility with a wayfinding problem rarely solves it by buying more signs. Adding signs to a broken system makes the system worse — more visual noise, more conflicting information, more places where a first-time visitor has to stop and read. Signs PQ approaches wayfinding as a system design problem first, a fabrication problem second. The deliverable is a coherent sign family that uses one visual language, places signs at decision points (not arbitrary points), uses message hierarchy that matches user mental models, and gets out of the way of users who already know where they're going.

Every wayfinding engagement starts with a site survey. We walk the facility from a first-time user's perspective — entering from parking, navigating to the most-trafficked destinations, identifying decision points where a user has to choose between paths, and documenting the places where the current system fails. For healthcare clients, this means walking the patient journey. For universities, it means walking the visitor and incoming-student journeys. For transit facilities, it means simulating peak-hour passenger flow. The survey deliverable is a decision-point map and a recommended message hierarchy — the foundation for the sign family design.

Sign family design — coherent across every install.

A wayfinding sign family is a kit of parts: monument and entry-level identification, primary directional (high-level destinations), secondary directional (within-zone navigation), destination identification (the room or area itself), and informational (rules, hours, emergency). The family uses one type system, one color system, one panel construction, and consistent placement rules. We design the family from scratch for each engagement — or extend an existing brand standard if the client has one. The result is a system where every sign you see on the campus or facility looks like it was designed by one team, because it was.

ADA-compliant from the ground up.

Wayfinding has accessibility obligations the rest of signage doesn't always have. We design and fabricate to the ADA 2010 Standards: tactile character height, finish, and proportion meeting the standard; Braille meeting Grade 2 specifications; pictograms and symbol use meeting size and clearance requirements; and mounting heights and locations meeting reach-range standards. For facilities where bilingual or multilingual signage is part of the user requirement, we coordinate translation and typography to ensure secondary languages don't compromise the primary system's readability.

Fabrication and installation tuned for the facility.

Wayfinding installations happen in environments that have constraints other commercial signage doesn't: hospitals with infection-control requirements, schools with student-traffic durability requirements, transit hubs with high-traffic abuse, government facilities with security requirements. We specify materials and finishing accordingly — and install in coordination with facility operations so the work doesn't disrupt the people the wayfinding system serves.

Can you refresh an existing wayfinding system instead of starting from scratch?

Yes. Many engagements are refresh and extension projects rather than ground-up redesigns. We audit the existing system, identify what's working, fix what isn't, and add to the family where coverage is missing.

Do you handle Braille translation?

Yes. Braille is translated by certified providers and verified before fabrication. We work to Grade 2 Braille standards.

Can wayfinding install happen in phases?

Yes. Most wayfinding systems install in phases by zone, especially for operating facilities. We sequence the install so the user always has working wayfinding through the transition.
